DISASTROUS BLAZE
SYDNEY BUSINESSES DESTROYED. HEAVY DAMAGE. (Received 22. 10.15 a.m.) Sydney August 22. One of the most disastrous fires in recent vears gutted the whole of the island block of business nremises bounded by Fov lane, and Elizabeth and Goulburn streets. The buildings were occupied bv a number of motoring firms and others. The blaze was yerv spectatcular. and the neighbouring premises of Washington. Soul, and Battinson. manufacturing chemists. was severely damaged b- fire and water The damage is estimated at between £150,000 and £200.000 DANNEVIRKE HOUSE BURNT. Dannevirke. August 22 Fire on Saturday evening practical Iv destroyed a 10-roomed house in Edwards street, owned and occupied bv Mr G. W. Wright, a dentist, who was alone in the house at the time, and is unable to account for the origin. The insurance on the house was £lBOO. on the outbuildings £175. and on the furniture and effects £7OO all in the State Fire Office. Mr Wright estimates his loss above insurance at £l5OO.
