ISSUING VALUELESS CHEQUES

CHARGES AGAINST YOUTH. THREE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT At the Napier Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., three charges of obtaining money by false pretences, to wit having issued valueless cheques and one with attempting to obtain money, were prepferred against Leonard Gordon Hamilton A. J. McDougall. The accused pleaded guilty to all charges. In detailing the facts of the case sSenior-DeVective Butler stated that the accused was 11) years ot age, ami was born in the South Island where he received a fair education. He went to Petone where he worked on a milk run then left to go to the Manawatu district where he became staanded in Palmerston North. There he obtained two cheque forms by false pretences and produced one to pay a day’s board at an hotel. After receiving the change he went to another hotel and did the same thing. After this he went to Auckland, where he tendered another cheque and eventually came to Napier where he endeavoured to carry out same operations. He tendered a cheque to a jeweller, but when the ’phone went the accused ran away. “This is his first appearance in court,” commented the detective.

His Worship was told that there was another eJTarge against the arcus ed, and a remand woujd be adkedl in respect to this.

Senior-Detective Butler stated that he had a written statement from the accused who admitted all the offences. The detective had to apply to Petone, Wellington and Christchurch on certain matters.
