A grave situation has again arisen at Nanking owing to the rapid advance of the Northerners. A naval wireless indicates that all Europeans have been ordered to stand ready for evacuation aboard British warships. It is reported that an ultimatum has been received from the Northerners demanding the immediate surrender of Nanking, otherwise the city will be shelled. Later advice states that shelling has commenced. H.M.S. Wyvern was hit several times without casualties. Meantime the situation is most tense. —(A. and N.Z.)
