CONTROL OF TRANSPORT

ANOMALIES IN PRESENT SYSTEM INQUIRIES BEING MADE. Parlt Buildings, Aug. 19. Replying to Mr. V. K. Potter (Koskiil) in the House of Representatives, who asked whether the Government intended to set up a transport hoard, the Prime Ministm stated that there W’ere anomalies in the present system of controlling transport and very careful inquiries were being made in regard u> the effect of the legislation that was passed last year. In certain countries there were transport utility boards. He did not suggest that’they should go as far as that, but the time was undoubedly fast approaching when some new organisation would be necessary in order that transportation questions and licenses might be surveyed bv an independent board. It had been found there were several anomalies in connection with the operation of the act of last year and inquiries were at present being made to see if those am m,flies could be overcome.

Mr. Harris: Do you propose to take the granting of licenses out of the hands of companies owning transport systems?

Mr. Coates: The inquiries being made cover that question.
