WAR IN CHINA
PUKOW OCCUPIED BOMBARDMENT OF NANKING BY NATIONALIST TROOPS. [By Cable —Brest Assa. — OopyrUbM (Received 19, 11.45 a.m.) (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, Aug. 18. British naval authorities on the Yangtsze have made arrangements lor tacilitating the withdrawal to vessels in the river of foreign residents in Nanking should such a course become necessary in view of the presence of the Northern troops, wiiich have already occupied Pukow on the opposite side of the river and are reported to have commenced a bombardment of Nanking. THE OUT RAILWAY. DEFENCE LINE TO BE REESTABLISHED. (Received 19. 11.45 a.m.) (British Official Wireless.) RugOy, Aug. 18. The railway line, which was cut in consequence of interference with the aeroplane, is a loop line on the western border of the international settlement. It connects Kiangwan with the Chinese military headquarters and is near the British posts on the Shanghai cordon established by the defence force when the international settlement was imperilled some months ago. By pure coincidence this has occurred at a time when refugees and armed stragglers from the defeated Southern forces are flocking along th* route from Nanking to Shanghai in such numbers that the international settlement authorities have considered it advisable partially to reestablish the defence line. This pre. cautionary measure was taken yesterday.
Latest reports from Shanghai stat* that although conditions are quiet there is latent uneasiness among the Chinese due to the uncertainty of the situation and a consequent reoccurrence of extremist propaganda activities.
