SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE
ERECTION WORK STOPPED. BY STRIKE OF IRONWORKERS. (Received 19, 10.20 a.m.) Sydney, Aug. 19. As the result of a strike of boilermakers and ironworkers’ assistants employed on the harbour bridge, all erection work is stopped. Work at the quarries which provide stone for the bridge is also stopped owing to a strike of crane drivers. Altogether 500 men are idle. The men demand an extra .30/- a week for working at heights. As the contract of the construction company with the Government provides for payment of award rates only, the management refuse the demand and the men were advised that the Government alone could authorise the increase in payments asked for.
