EDUCATIONAL MATTERS

MEETING OF HAWKE'S BAY BOARD ITEMS OF INTEREST. The . monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was held this morning, when Mr J. Clark Thomson occupied the chair. Other members present were: Messrs W. Oates, W. Cuthbertson. A King, T. A. Coleman. R. C, Wright. J C. Wauchop. C. Lassen G. McKav. apd J R. Kirk. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs G. A. Maddison and R. Soundy. The following correspondence was dealt with:—

Relative to the proposad removal of the Crownthorpe School, the department wrote advising that the board’s resolution had been brought under the notice of the Minister of Education, who had taken the necessary steps to consult the Minister of lands on the matter. —Power was given to the chairman and secretary to attend to the report of tne Minister of Lands.

Regarding the Tikokino School's correspondence dealing with conveyance. the department wrote advising that grants were given only in cases where the only'alternative to conveyance was the establishment of a new school. In this case a new school would have to be placed about three miles from Tikokino. and there was therefore not a strong claim for it. Further, there must be some limit to these special grants lor conveyance, and the department was not justified in payim- more than one shilling per day when that was the allowance paid when a child was compelled to live away from home in order to attend school. The Minister has agreed to payment of 10/- per school day till the end of the present rear, when the position must be reviewed.—The letter was merely received The Te Karaka District High School Committee wrote stating that there had come to the knowledge of the committee a suggestion that a movement was afoot to close the secondary department, and the committee gave a lengthy statement detailing its reason for opposing the proposal. and pointing out how prejudicial it would be to the interests of the children now attorn! school —It was decided to forward the letter to the Education Department.

The New Zealand Education Boards’ Association wrote asking the board what subjects it would desire to be discussed in the event of a boards’ conference being held at an early date and askin- if the. board desired to be represented at the conference,—lt was decided that the chairman and Messrs Wauchop and Cuthbertson attend the conference on behalf of the board, and that the Financial Committee decide -non what remits the board would put forward'.
