WELLINGTON (21) v„ SOUTH LAND (9).

Wellington, Aug. 17. Wellington defeated Southland today at Athletic Park in a representative Rugbv match by 21 points to 9. The exhibition was a very poor one, and Wellington were undoubtedly the superior team. At half-time the score was 13 to nil in Wellington’s favour. The play among the both backs was inferior to the work of the forwards.

Kilby, an ex-Southlander. playing half for Wellington, played brilliantly, sending out fine passes and mak. nig beautiful openings. Porter, the All Black wing-forward, was always a thorn in Southland’s side. Passing rushes broke down frequently through deplorably bad handling. Both teams tackled well and the referee interpreted the rules leniently. Many grand opportunities to score were missed by Wellington. Johnson, Taylor, Edgar, Porter and Pringle scored for Wellington, Ransom converting three. Dyack potted a goal for Southland and McCoy scored a try, which Dyack converted. WIN FOR MANAWHENUA.
