CAMPING SITES

FOR VISITING MOTORISTS POSSIBILITY OF USING NELSON PARK HASTINGS CAMP ALSO FAVOURED. The question p camp site lor visiting motorist m Napier was discussed at length yesterday afternoon when a deputation from the Napiei Borough Council waited on the executive ot-the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association on the matter. file chairman (Mr. J. H. Edmundson) explained that a sub-committee of the association had met the council which had generously decided to make an effort to grant a portion of Nelson Park subject to certain conditions After reading the rules as drawn up by the North Island Motor Union the speaker stated that a small charge would be made but it was not anticipated that the association would make any money out of this—in fact it expected to have to pay out. Cr. J. Hindmarsh expressed himself enthusiastic on the matter and felt sure that the whole council would approve of the scheme. There were certain conditions that the council would necessarily have to impose if the matter came to a head, but they were onlv of a minor character.

“My idea is to make the Napier camping site in Nelson Park, the best in New Zealand,” declared the councillor, “and to do this it is necessary that every detail should he taken into consideration. We should endeavour to make the camp an attraction to Napier.” He added that he felt sure the council as a whole would realise that if the association carried out the scheme it would, be helping the town to be a centre of attraction. Personally, he favoured a water scheme with several taps being installed, a telephone booth, either n the camp or in Morris street, fireplaces and the area for moving cars clearlv defined. “Generally speaking the association will be given the support of the council in anything reasonable,” commented Cr Hindmarsh. The chairman stated that the attendant was necessary to look after the interests of both the association and Borough Council. “The council desires to help in anything that will improve the town,” declared the Mayor, Mr. J. Vigor Brown. OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST. Relative to a notice board, Cr. Hindmarsh suggested that it call attention to other points of interest in the town such as the baths and gardens. “And the Inner Harbour.” interjected a member w’ith a laugh. “Both harbours,” retorted the Mayor, who added that the council wag anxious to have tne thing done as expeditiously as possible On being asked if it would be possible to have the camp laid out for the coming season, the chairman stated that the ■ greater part of the scheme would be completed bv the summer. Before the deputation- retired the chairman assured it that the association would take up tne m«L-«.-r at once and he trusted that when completed he camp would be the, if not. then one of the finest* sites in the Dominion. PROPOSED HASTt.sGS CAMP. Ihe proposed site at Hastings war also discussed, the Hastings Borough Council writing to the association extending an invitation to the subcommittee to meet the Reserves Com mittee of the council in connection with the forming 01 a motorists’ camping ground on BeatsonG Park. The secretary (Mr. Chadwick) stated that the proposed site was an ideal one and the Hastings Borougn Council was just as keen on having a good camp as was the Napier body. It was decided that the same sub. committee as appointed to deal with the Napier problem meet the Hastmgs Council at the earliest possible date.
