IMPROVED ROADS
LONDON SCHEME RAPID PROGRESS BEING MADE PICCADILLY CIRCUS BEING RE-LAID. (British Official Wireless). (Received 17, 12.30 p.m.) Kugby, Aug. 16 Several important road improvements ine in progress m London under the direction of the Ministry ot Transport. A building which projects into The Strand forming an awkward bottleneck about midway down the famous tlioroughtare. is being demolished When completed the improvement will give Hie Strand uniform breadth, greatly facilitating traffic.
The whole of Piccudillv which ruus westward from Piccadilly Circus is being re-laid and new water, gas, and electricity mams installed. Workmen are engaged night and day in n endeavour to complete the task before the holiday season, which invariablv lightens the volume of traffic in August, is over. Progress hitherto has been rapid and the contractors are reported to be in advance of the scheduled time. A second section whifch is being commenced tomorrow necessitates the complete rerouting of westward traffic and in order to facilitate movement the King has. for the first tiriie. permitted buses and heavy traffic to use The Mall which leads from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace Speeds are restricted in The Mall, which was not constructed to carry such traffic. Work also began to-day on the new bridge across the Thames, which will replace Lambeth footbridge It is estimated that it will take four years to complete and will cost about £1.000,000.
