Five ’planes hopped off from Oakland at noon to-day for the Dole race to Honolulu before a cheering crowd of 200,000 spectators. Griffin and Henley in the monoplane Oklahama were the first away. Griffin started his heavily loaded ’plane down the runaway promptly at 12 o’clock, and soon the machine soared into the air. Goddard was the next moving down the runaway, two minutes later, piloting a Claimants, but he was unable to leave the ground, and rocked from side to side down the course. His left wing then snapped in the middle. Neither Goddard nor his navigator, Hawkins, were hurt. The ’plane was too heavily loaded to rise.

Irving took off in a Pabco fllier at 12.4 o’clock, but stopped one minute later, being also unable to leave the ground. Irving declared that the ’plane got away too quickly, and announced that he would try again as soon as possibl ■ after 1’ 6 others had departed. Charles Parkhurst, whose ’plane, Air King, was disqualified shortly before the take off, announced, .following the failure of the two ’planes to rise, that the committee wo-o absolutely right in barring him. Frost, in a Golden Eagle, took off successfully at 12.30, being followed half a minute later by Peddlar, and Miss Mildred Doran, in the ’plane Miss Doran. Ninety seconds later Jensen followed in the Aloha, then Goebel took the running a minute afterwards in the Woolaroo, while Erwiii, in the Dalia’s Spirit departed at 12.36. —(A. and N.Z.) Captain Giles intondecl to take off on August 15, but discovered that acid seeping from a defective storage battery had rotted a large por tion of the' fabric from the lower portion of the fuselage. Captain Giles declared that acid had disabled the 'plane from entering in tile Dole Race because he is unable to repair it in time. —(A. and N.Z.) WELLINGTON THE FIRST STOP. ■ (Received 17 8.55 a.m.) New York, Aug. 16. Captain F. G. Giles is scheduled to arrive at Selfridge Gield, Detroit, today from YVyandotte. He will then start for Wellington, the first stop planned.— (A. and N.Z.) TWO MACHINES RETURN. San Francisco. August 16. Towards the end. one ’plane started across the field almost as soon as the wheels of the preceding one left the ground. The Aloha flew very low. worrving the spectators. Peddlar and Miss Doran, who is the only woman essaying the flight, returned to the field within 12 minutes owing to back-firing, after which in short order Erwin and Grffin returned, leaving onlv three ’planes still flying, less than an hour after the last entrant took off. Miss Doran is a Michigan school teacher. She hopped off again with J. A. Peddlar as pilot and Lieutenant Silas Knope as navigator. The Golden Eagle's pilot is Jack Frost, and the navigator Gordon Scott. The Aloha’s pilot is Martin Jensen and the navigator Caprain Paul Schulter. The YVooloraa’s fWoolorOo?) pilot is Arthur Goebel and the navigator Lieutenant William Davis. It is estimated that the flight will occupv 22J hours.
