Commenting on the Main Highways in Hawke’s Bay, the annual report of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association states: “The highways in this district have been weh maintained and generally improved all round during the year- Grades and sharp corners have been eased in a great number of places and many bridges rebuilt, strengthened or replaced with culverts. Several small deviations have also been carried out, greatly improving the alignment, cutting out distance and widening narrow roads.”

As the result of correspondent between the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison) and the Prime Minister, it has been arranged that thirteen men from Hastings will be included amongst the thirty men to be put on Public Works road construction unemployment relief work, in Wairoa, and the foreman was in Hastings’ this afternoon making a selection.

Except for a small vent in the centre, the crater lake on the summit of Ruapehu has been frozen over ol late, an unusual occurrence, as, despite the high altitude and surrounding snowfields, the lake is usually warm, and occasionally boding in places (states the Auckland “Star”). At a lower level in the National Park is Tama Lake, where in very cold weather the surface freezes, and ice 22in. in thickness has been known. Following the new survey of the roads in the Hawke's Bay district, direction posts and danger signals have been erected in all parts ol the district, wherever likely to be of service to motorists, comments the president (Mr. J. H. Edmundson) in liis annual report to be presented at the general meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association on Friday. The president further states that as a result of the Association’s activities it may be fairly stated that Hawke’s Bay is now one of the best marked provinces in New Zealand. Direction posts and danger signals were erected in the following districts:—Southern Hawke's Bay—Norsewood to Woodville (inclusive) ID, Central Hawke’s Bay— Ormondviile to Otane (inclusive) 10, Napier and Hastings, Waipukurau and Waipawa districts, 20, a total of 40 lor the year In addition to the new work mentioned above existing signs and signals were repaired and painted as occasion required.

“The bitumen concrete work was continued on the Napier-Wellington via Wairarapa highway from the Waitangi Washout to the junction with the Famdon-Hastings highway,” states the annual report of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association to be presented this week.

The Hastings Citizens’ Band, under the conductorship of Air C. Bryant, played a most enjoyable programme at Cornwall Park yesterday, before a large gathering of the public. Amongst the many attractive numbers played were a selection from •‘The Mikado,” and a cornet solo entitled "The Skylark,” by Bandsman L. Simsonseu. The collection taken up amount to £6 7s 4d.

Reference to camp sites for motorists is made in me annual report ol the Hawke s Bay Automobile Association, the committee pointing out that camp sites, for the benefit ot visiting motorists, had been provided at George’s Para (Napier), Beamon's Park (Hastings), Coronation Park (Waipawa), luruUaie Park (Taradale), The Domain (Dannevirke) and a site near bridge at Waipukurau. The Association was preparing a set of rules and a scale of charges to assist local bodies in arranging a first-class service to campers.
