NEWS AND NOTES. •, A recent vrstor to Waipukurau who had not seen the town for a ’ few years, expressed himself as both surprised and pleased as to the up-to-dateness of the majority of the business premises, as well as the residential development. Advice has been received that the members of the Hastings Orphans’ Club are looking forward with special interest to their annual visit to Waipukurau and this is being arranged for by the local fraternity. The visit will take place at an early date and during the day to be spent in the district, the Pukeora Sanatorium, also the hospital, will be included in the itinerary. The Waipukurau Club has under consideration the annual visit to Onga Onga, a hearty invitation having been received on this score. The lesidential growth of Waipukurau is being steadily maintained, and noteworthy are a number of new homes taking shape, or nearing completion in McDonald’s Extension. A very pleasant evening was spent on Friday night by members of the N.Z. Order of Oddfellows and their friends when a plain and fancy dress dance was held under the auspices of Arlington-Rebekah Ladies' Lodge. Mr George Judd, a well-known and highly respected farmer, of Manaia (Masterton), who, on Monday night, was run down by a motor car, ami killed, was a brother o-f Mr H. Judd, of Waipukurau. On Thursday afternoon last a delightful party took place at Mrs Rice’s home, the Vicarage when members of the Mother’s 'Union and friends met to bid farewell to Mrs Elsmlie Reid, who is leaving next week on a holiday trip to Sydney. The president of the Union (Mrs J. Hobson) in a happy little speech wished their guest a pleasant trip, a happy holiday and safe return. Mrs Heid thanked them all for their good wishes and kind thoughts. The afternoon passed all too quickly with competitions (Mrs Vincent Bradley being the winner), songs by Miss Howson, reminiscences, and -friendly cbats. A delicious afternoon tea was handed round.

A meeting, well attended and enthusiastic, of the combined Rugby football clubs and the Ladies’ Hockey Club, was held on Thursday night last with the object of raising funds for players injured during the season. Mr P. K. Smyrk occupied the chair. A programme was drafted in connection with the gymkhana to be held on Saturday, 17th prox. It was also decided to hold a ball on Wednesday 14th prox., in the Municipal Theatre, this date being that of the representative Rugby match. Central H.B. v. Taihape. It is hoped that the public will accord liberal support to this very worthy object. The final match for this season between the Waipukurau and Waipawa Clubs for the Hunter Shield was played in Waipawa on Friday evening, resulting in each club winning 5 games. The Waipukurau Club has won 17 out of the 30 games played and has now regained possession of the shield. The Waipukurau winners in last night’s match were Messrs. A. O- Williams, V. H. Bradley, H. R. Peacock, D. H. Rickey and E. B. Waddington. Scores (Waipukurau players being mentioned first): —Mackie (51.) v. Mackay (65); Gardiner 32 v. McLeod (48); Wilder (35( v. Edwards (40); Tansey (37) v. H. Rathbone (63). Waipukurau, 477; Waipawa, 473. The final match in the billiards tournament is to be played in Waipukurau on Thursday next. TARADALE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING. The annual congregational meeting of the Taradale Presbyterian Church was held in the Church Hall on Thursday evening, the Rev. C. Briefly presiding. There was a good attendance ,and the programme, which included quite a number of musical and elocutionary items, as well as reports on the church work, was followed closely and with much enthusiasm.

The chairman gave a brief review of the year’s work. The Session Clerk and Treasurer (Mr. J. Williamson) read the Session report and the balance-sheet which showed a credit of £4 14/1.

The following contributed to the programme:—Mrs D. Anderson and Master Syd. Clayton, pianoforte duet; Mr Gilchrist, two songs; Mrs Pollock and Mr Max Campbell, two duets; Mrs Brown, accompanied by Miss L. Brown (piano) and Master Keith Brown (violin), two songs; Miss Thelma Williamson, two recitations; Mrs V. Anderson, two songs. On the motion of Messrs. W. Brown and J. Phillips the report and balance-sheet were adopted and a vote of thanks and appreciation passed to the treasurer as well as to the performersAfter the benediction had been pronounced a very dainty supper was handed round by the ladies of the congregation.
