THE PICTURE HOUSES.
MUNICIPAL. The struggle between duty and love, when their pathways run in opposite directions, makes “Prowlers of the Night,” the Universal-Blue Streak Western, which opened at the Municipal Theatre on Saturday, a drama which would command attention on any garb and which is more compelling in its Western habiliments. Fred Humes, long identified with two-reel Westerns, firmly establishes himself ks a star of feature length pictures in this one gesture. He rides, ropes and acts with a spontaneity which will carry him far and there is a zest and youthful breeziness about his performances which is missing from that of the more established Western favourites. Barbara Kent, a beautiful newcomer, is the girl. She reveals a wealth of histrionic ability, not a little emotional depth and is pictorially so pleasing that the end of the picture comes all too quickly. Chapter two of the new serial, “Strings of Steel,” is shown in support, also news and travel pictures and comedies, COSY DE LUXE. The Royal Gorge, grandest of all Colorado’s incomparable scenery, was the location for “The Great K and A Train Robbery,” the thrilling story in which Tom Mix star 8 as Tom Gordon, a detective who tracks down a gang of outlaws who have robbed trains and worried officials of the road to the edge of nervous collapse. It is showing at the Cosy Theatre to-night. It is a real Western story of hard riding outlaws, a courageous, fast thinking detective who overcomes difficulties that dropt out of the sky, apparently, and almost wreck his plans for the capture of the desperadoes. Dorothy Dwan, a newcomer, is the girl in the piece. Lawrence Grey and Louise Brooks, with Evelyn Brent, have the main roles in “Love ’Em and Leave ’Em,” the supporting picture. A story of two sisters with differing moral codes, the picture i s gripping and not lacking in lighter moments.
