BOMB EXPLOSION
BRISBANE MYSTERY EXPLAINED
EFFORT TO DESTROY EVIDENCE IN ROBBERY CASE. (Received 15. 10.30 a.m.) Brisbane, Aug. 15. It is now believed that the ex plosion which wrecked the Criminal Investigation Department office in Elizabeth street on Saturday night was the result of an attempt to destroy evidence in a robbery case upon which detectives have been working for weeks past. It is believed that a bomb or similar explosive was thrown through the window of the room where the stolen goods were kept, A small fire was started, but quickly suppressed No explosives were stored in the premises. Many records were destroyed hut these were mostly old and of little value. Windows in buildings nearby were shattered and the explosion heard for miles around. Citv Detective Burns, who was sleeping on the premises, was sent to hospital suffering from severe shock.
An overnight cable stated: An explosion at midnight on Saturday wrecker! ths. office of the Criminal Investigation Department. Elizabeth street. Brisbane. The explosion was of tremendous force and strewed the streets in the vicinity with iron nnrl masonry.
