FOUR TESTS IN AFRICA. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote stating that it had been suggested that 21 matches should be played in the south African tour with three tests, the team to leave New Zealand on June 8, and leave South Africa early in October. South Africa had suggested 25 matches, with four tests, and that the team should leave New Zealand early in May. The chairman explained :hat since writing this letter the New Zealand Union had decided to agree to four tests but adhere to the 21 games. The team would leave the Dominion on May 14. TE AUTE’S WITHDRAWAL Replying to the union, the !e Aute College principal (Mr Loten) wrote in respect of tiie withdrawal of the college from the Maipawa SubUnion’s competitions. He informed the union that his explanation was that a match had been arranged on August 3 between le Aute and a Dannevirke team, but a few days prior to this match he had been inrormed by tile sub-union that five of the college players were required lor a representative match on the same day. That the cause of the trouble was that Te Aute arranged with Dannevirke for a match without first obtaining the permission of the sununion, was the opinion of Mr Phillips. “It is very unfortunate that this position has arisen, but Dannevirke should not have confirmed the match, as the permission of the sub-union had not been obtained.” stated the chairman. Mr King explained that the usual custom was to arrange a match and then apply for permission a dav or so before it was played. “That is not so with senior matches.” replied the chairman. “Mr Loten seems to forget that he is under the jurisdiction of the subunion. blit it is a matter which could easily be amicably settled.” he added. It was decided to inform Mr Loten that it was necessary for him to apply to the sub-union for permission to arrange a match, and to refer the whole matter back to the sub-union for settlement.
