COMMITTEE REPORTS.

PRESENTED TO BOROUGH COUNCIL WORK ON HASTINGS’ RESERVES The reports of the various committees were presented at the regular meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last eveningvvhen there was a full attendance or members. At the meeting of the Works and Reserves Committee there were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison), Crs. McKee, Simmons (chairman); Henderson, Lowe and Baker. Relative to the reserves the committee reported that the reserve in Victoria ' Square had been well cleaned up, dug and the hedges cut. In the railway reserve, from Southampton street southwards to about three chains beyond the railway gates had been cleaned up and rough levelled. About 70 trees of various kinds and 50 willows had been planted in Beatson’s Park. The lagoon in Cornwall Park had been improved by deepening, widening and ihe placing of rocks along the banks The hedges had been trimmed and cleaned underneath while the borders and shrubberies were now receiving general attention. The caretaker recommended that the main drive in Cornwall Park be top-dressed with lime sand owing to the rough nature of the surface and also that it be rolled with the Tandem roller. The question of putting limestone sand on afterwards, it is recommended, should he left in the hands of the chairman. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The borough engineer (Mr. G. E. Evans) reported the total number of sewer and water connections was now 2721. Tlie water pumped for the month was as below, the figures for the corresponding month last year being in parenthesisHavelock North, 2.283,170 ((>.'104,000); power house, 13,900.0000 (10,799.500); cost £173 6/7 (£lB5 5/-). Relative to loan works, he reported to the Works Committee as below:—A start had been made preparing the foundations of the roads which were to receive the “hot mix” surfacing during the coming season. Tile witter and sewer pities were being laid on to the footpaths, and the sides excavated to take the spall foundations. Since commencing work the following footpaths have been constructed out. of loan:—Hastings street extension: From Southampton to French streets, east. Avenue road: Going east from Riverslea road. South side Queen street: Going east from Sylvan road. North side Jervois street: Going east from Willow Park road north. The 'nngs.were now working in Dnfferin street. The laving of the stormwater pines alone King street had practically completed, and the work of timbering the Nelson street drain through private property, would be commenced as soon as possible.
