Hastings Motor Sheds

Must Conform with Architecture IMPROVING APPEARANCE OF TOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL DISCUSSION In keeping with the spirit of progressiveness, the Hastings Borough Council last evening made a "raid" on private motor garages and decreed that in all future permits tor buildings whore motor sheds are built in line with or In front of the house, the garage must conform to the aroniteoture of the houses, the garages to have gable roofs. This suggestion came from the Mayor who moved that it be adopted. "What is the idea of it," queried Cr. S. J. McKee, who thought that it would inflict a hardship on some people. "What about houses that have been up for 30 or 40 years—are we-to make the garages on the same style?’’ he asked. “It seems to me to be carrying things a bit too far,” he added. ADOPTED IN CHRISTCHURCH. The Mayor explained that in Christchurch, the City Council undei the Town Planning Act, had adopted the policy and he thought it nnght be advisable to do the same in Hastings. “We don’t want motorsheds built in iron on the street as they are not a benefit to the town. It won't make such a big hardship and it will prevent some of these ‘anv old’ places being put up.’’ "What is going to happen if some old-fashioned house is burnt down?" asked a councillor. "Are we going to make them build the new house like the old garage?" "No. we can’t make them rebuild. It is the future sheds that this applies to," replied the Mayor. “I too think this is carrying things a bit too far,” commented Cr. G. C Lowe. “Motor sheds are motor sheds not bungalow sheds." "This will affect all future buildings and we have a perfect right tohave some say m what sort of buildings are to be erected in the borough." stated Cr. M Johnson “We are here to protect, and to see to. every interest in the borough, and when all i s said and done the difference between a good motor-shed and ‘any old thing' will be only a few pounds.” POOR SHEDS AT THE BACK. “If they don't want a good shed then let them put it et the back of the house,” commented Cr. A. I Rainbow, “but if the shed is to be on the street then it should be a good one.” “Do I understand from this I'-at you may have to put a ‘lean-to’ on the shed if it is a ‘lean-to’ house If so I’m against that." declared Cr. R. Henderson, who, however, was in favour of all sheds being good ones Cr. McKee explained that if a person wished to build a plain shed then he might do so at the rear of the house. - "It is wrong, anyway, to have motor-sheds on the street. There should he a by-law framed prohibiting them," declared Cr. R. Baker, IMPROVE TOWN’S APPEARANCE The Mayor explained that the motion tabled was n-.*t as clear as he thought it should be and stated that the committee in discussing the matter considered only those cases where the sheds were to be built in front of the house. “Tltev can build what they like at the back hut the main purpose is to prevent unsightly obstructions and to improve the general appearance of the town, I don’t-suggest that the sheds should have bav windows nnd all that.” Cr. Johnson, in seconding the motion, also explained that the committee did not discuss sheds at the back of the houses. “Then that covers my grounds lor opposing the resolution," stated Cr. McKee.

On the suggestion of Cr. Renderson it was decided to add to the resolution “that ths sheds have gable roofs.”

“It might be n bit hard on some peonle," commented the Mayor. Cr. Henderson assured him that the extra cost would be only a few pounds. The resolution was then carried.
