NEWS AND NOTES. (Own correspondent.) A musical evening was spent by members of the Orphans’ Club on Wednesday night and a sociable as well as entertaining time was spent, Chief Orphan. G, 1 - Chatwin presiding and vice-Chief Orphan b. H. Wood leading the orchestra. The adjourned inquest concerning the death of Edward Joseph Casey who died in the Waipukurau Hospital as the result of being crushed by a polo at Pukeliou on August 1 was held on Wednesday. Dr. H. W. M. Kendall, district corner, presiding. After hearing the evidence of Reuben Bramwell Parker, overseer in the Pand T Department. Rupert ft Sham Petherick. junr., telegraph linesman, William Harrison Gibson, actingtelegraph line foreman, and Dr. J. L. Reed the following verdict was returned ■ “That the deceased died from shock and internal hemorrhage, resulting from accidental crushing by a telegraph pole, that he and others were working at, at the time. The annual general meeting of tl.e Waipukurau Defence Rifle Club was held lust night, Mr. J. W, Harding, president, presiding over a fair 1 )' large attendance of members. The election of officers resulted Patron. Mr Percy Hunter; patroness, Mrs j. W. Harding; president, Mr. J. W. Harding; deputy-president. Mr, W. G Bryce: vice-presidents. Sir George Hunter. M.P.. Messrs J. D. Ormond, J Winlove, W. Henderson, W. A. Chambers, L. M. Monckton, J. C Main. N. G. Hawthorn, H, McLean and A. Hodge; treasurer, Rifleman H Butler; secretary, Wifleman F. N. McVicar; hon. auditor, Mr. J. Stewart: range and ammunition officer, Rifleman J. R. Atkins; committee. Riflemen 1,. J. Taylor, A. P. Green, J. R. Atkins, A. Chambers. S. Annand. J. Mcßride, and R. McLean ; handicapper and sole selector, Rifleman F. N. McVicar. The secretary's services was the subject of complimentary remarks, and he was voted £5 by way of personal expenses. The Press of the province was thanked! for the attention given to uublicity.
Tue Waipukurau Fire Board has completed loan arrangements in connection with the capital expenditure of £5OO authorised. The amount has been raised at 6 per cent., for a period of 10 years. The annual ball of the Waipukurau District High School is to be held on the 29th prox.. instead of the date previously fixed. Mrs K. W. Carpenter, who recently underwent an operation, has made steady progress towards recovery from the ord:- ' and returned to hei iiome on Monday. A limerick ■ nupetition was a specially interesting feature at the Orphanosium of the Waipukurau Orphans' Club, held on Wednesday night. deputy-Chief S, H. Wood being awarded the first place by the judge (Patron Dr. C. Raymond). The Chief (Orphan G. L. Chatwin) was accorded very appropriate musical honours apropos the advent of an infant daughter, and her health .toasted The musical and recitative programme was contributed to by the orchestra, also Orphans Boyce. Milne, Mann. McLeod. Cooper. Windle, Ward, and Malkin, while Orphan Hall led a. combined chorus effort.
