Mr. H. W. Waters left Hastings this morning on his return to Wellington.

Commissioner Hay, chief officer of the Salvation Army, arrived in Hastings to-day.

Mr. C. Roberts, of Dunedin, has accepted the position of temporary science teacher at the Napier technical School.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lean, of Hastings, intend leaving on Thursday oi next week for an extended holiday in Australia.

Mr. Justice Ostler arrived in Wellington from Blenheim to-day, and will leave on Monday for Napier aim Gisborne.

Mr. H. E. Napier, manager of the N.Z. Fruitgrowers’ Federation, left Hastings tins morning, alter a short official visit to the district.

His Honour the Chief Justice (Sit Charles Skerrett) has been confined to his home for the past few days with neuritis. Yesterday his condition was reported to have improved. He will return to the bench on Monday at the latest.

A vote of condolence with the widow and family of the late Dr. E. Boxer, C.M.G.. of Hastings, was carried at the annual meeting of the ■Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association last night. The late Dr. Boxci was president of the New Zealand association for four years.

It is reported that when Mr. Justice Alpers sat on Wednesday to admit his associate, Mr. F. H. B. Nixon, of Christchurch, as a barrister and solicitor, he made his last ap]>earance on the Bench. Mr. Justice Alpers has been in bad health latterly. and has commenced leave for an indefinite period. It is possible that he may resign from the Bench.

A Whangarei Press Association message slates that Mr James McKinnon, whose death was announced from Wellington yesterday was prominently associated with local, bodies in the Whargarei district for years, in 1883 he was appointed to the first Road Board, following which he became clerk to the County Council, which office he held for 27 years, during this period he was also Town Clerk to the borough for 11 vears Subsequently he held the positions of clerk to the Hikurangi and Onerahi Town Boards. In 1893 the deceased was appointed secretary and treasurer to the Whangarei Harbour Board, and held the office until June last, when he retired owing to failing health. He was also secretary to the High School Board of Governors from 1903 until December 1926. and Past Master of Masonic Lodge 1647 C.C. He held the distinction of being elected a member of the District Grand Lodge of England and a life member of the local lodge. He was the first secretary of the Whangarei Bowling Club and a prominent member of the Presbyterian Chinch, being an elder and Clerk of the Session,
