Mr. T. Smellie, of New Plymouth, received through the post a day or two ago a couple of £1 notes, with a written statement “amount you were done out oi years ago with interest.” The amount was forwarded from Manaia, where Mr. Smellie was in business between 25 and 30 years ago.

Williams had consented to officiate at the ceremony, and would notify him in a day or so just when it would suit him to attend. Tho Shaw, Savill and Albion Company have received cable news that their damaged steamer Mamari, escorted by the Matakana, arrived at Bahia Blanca, Argentine, on Wednesday. The message adds that there is no damage to the cargo of the Mamari. As the result of the collision with the iceberg, she will lie delayed about three weeks. Complaints are being made regarding the conduct of some mischievous persons who have been setting fire to the raupo in the swamp along the railway line from Hastings towards Poukawa, which has resulted in the destruction of the nests built by ducks, swans and other wild birds. Persons guilty nf this evil act ar ■ liable to a penalty. A suggestion that a fire in a passage way of the Union Buildings, Auckland, on the same floor as the American Consulate, could be interpreted as a demonstration regarding the execution of the Italians in the United States, is ridiculed by Mr. Wilson, superintendent of the Auckland city lire brigade. “It is all piffle,” he said, when the theory of incendiarism was referred to him. The fire started at the bottom of a cupboard, which inclined to the idea that a carelessly flung cigarette butt or match might have started the outbreak, which did very little damage.

In Wanganui was shown a tiki which was brought down from a river settlement by a Maori. The latter discovered the tiki while rooting out a stump for firewood. Adjacent to it were some pieces of whalebone, which indicated, by their crumbling appearance, that they had been deposited there a great many years ago. The tiki, from its size and appearance, is considered by the finder and other Maoris to be one of the finest ever discovered in New Zealand. It had evidently been place there long ago for safety. The origin will now be very difficult to trace, owing to old Maoris having passed away.
