N.Z. UNION MEETS. SHIELD CHALLENGES ARRANGED. SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR. Wellington, Aug. 10. A meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union was held to-night. The chairman (Mr. S. S. Dean) presided, and there were also present Messrs. C. P. Mullaney, H. S. Leith, A. C. Kitto, E. Wylie, T. A. Fletcher, W. Hornig, and A. E. Neilson (secretary) The Wanganui Union asked that their amteh with Manawhenua on September 3 be declared a shield game. They had advised Manawhenua to this effect.—The request was granted provisionally. Taranaki also made a similar request concerning their game with Manawhenua on August 31, and the fixture was confirmed. The East Coast Rugby Union asked for a ruling as to what constituted “residence.” One of their players worked in the country and returned to town for the week-end at his parents’ home. Should such player play for the country district or for the town district?—lt was decided to reply that all ' players should declare their places of residence, and having once made such declaration they could not chop and change The matter of the tour to South Africa next year was considered in committee, and upon resuming in open meeting it was reported that it had been decided to inform the South African Union that New Zealand was averse to playing more than 21 matches on the tour, but were agreeable to play four test matches with a week’s rest before each match. After a discussion last night on the value of shields and trophies, the Canterbury Rugby Union decided to send to Manawhenua a provisional challenge for the Ranfurly Shield, the match to be held on Septembei 7. SOUTHLAND BEATEN. Tlmaru, Aug. 10. The touring Southland Rugby team played South Canterbury tins afternoon,, the visitors beiijg deleated by 26 to 13. The weather was ideal and the ground in good order. The attendance was estimated at 200 J. The game was fast and a good exhibition was given by both sides, but the tackling of Southland was rot i equal to that of South Canterbury, ; and the local forwards also excelled. : At hair-time the score was 20 to 13 :in favour of the local team. In the I second half only two tries were regieI tered, both by South Canterbury, neither being converted.

INTER-COLLEGE GAMES. WANGANUI COLLEGE BEATEN. New Plymouth, Aug. 10. The New Plymouth Boys’ High School and Wanganui College provided a bright exhibition of Rugby to-day despite coutinuous rain and a muddy ground. School won by 17 to nil, being decidedly superior in the back division and securing most of the ball from the scrums. Beck scored three tries and kicked a penalty and Brown converted one try. PALMERSTON BEATS WAIRARAPA. Masterton, Aug. 10. The annual Rugby match between Palmerston North and Wairarapa Boys’ High Schools was played to-day under ideal conditions, and resulted in a win for Palmerston by nine to three, after a very entertaining exhibition.

The first spell ended three all, a penalty goal to Wairarapa and a try to the visitors after a splendidlyexecuted passing movement. Palmerston North threw the ball about in a spectacular fashion in the second spell, but the deadly tackling of the Wairarapa backs kept the score down, the visitors scoring only twice.
