COUNTY AFFAIRS.

PATANGATA COUNCIL. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Patangata County Council was held yesterday in Waipukurau. ebing attended by Councillors Chas. Pattison (chairman), Thos. Butler, R H. White. E T. Wilder. A. W. T. Longley. C. R. Edgecombe. J. D. Ormond, A. McGaffin, and E. C. Nation. A special order making permission for the repayment of maturing loans on the Otane Town Hall and Recreation Ground, was passed. A loss of £665 at 6 per cent, is involved. Correspondence was dealt with as follows:—

Public Trust Office. Greymouth, advised that the Dobson mine disaster relief fund had been handded over to the office.

W J. McKay applied for the lease of an allotment on Kairakau beach. — Cr. McGaffin said that there should be a condition as to erecting a building within a reasonable time, sav one year. Cr. Longley concurred with this viewpoint. Simpson and Williamson wrote re Patangata 4 A subdivisions 4 and 5. The council was thanked for the nformation tendered apropos the road dedication, the parties concerned having been advised of the council’s decision. —Received.

Post and Telegraph Department wrote re the erection of a telephone line for Mr J. R. Thurston, the council’s permission being sought.— Approved. H B. Automobile Association wrote in regard to the menace of wandering stock, and apposing the action of some county authorities in granting grazing rights over roads. —It was resolved to advise that grazing rights are not granted and that a ranger is employed.

Waipukurau Borough Council applied for a grant towards the cost of upkeep for the dental clinic.—lt was decided to inquire as to the children from the county recivine attention at the clinic. Waipawa County Council wrote re the agreement p-pproyed by both counties as to the control of the Wel-lington-Napier main highway, alone the boundary between Waipawa and Te Ante.—Received. Otaki Borough Council wrote re heavy traffic license fee paid bv \V. Banks, now operatine in Otaki. to the Patangata County Council. An opinion was read tending to show that a claim for a refund could not succeed in the case of a license taken out in one entr and the vehicle being utilised in the first year elsewhre. Department of Labour enquired as to the position in the county regarding unemployment relif work. The department had placed 3000 men on relief work and made nrovosion for 1100 additional. —Received. The New Zealand Farmers’ Union (Dannevirke) wrote re the expedition of the construction of the Poranea-hau-Te Uri road It was desired that the settlers be given the opportunity of coming through Te Uri via Ormondville to Dannevirke.—After a lengthy discussion it was decided that the engineer and councillors for the Porangahau ridin" visit the area. The engineer has filed applications for Main Highway subsidies as follow:—Epairama riding £734 7s 2d. Porangahau £731 5s 2d. Patangata £lOO 14s 9d, Orooxx £35 0s 7d: total, £l6Ol 7s lOd.

Cr. White reported that the Otane Town Board would be willing to under take the collection of fees under the health by-laws. It would be necessary foj- the board to contribute the council’s share of the inspector’s salary. It was resolved that the expenses of the representative on the District Highways Council be met to the extent of £1 per day. Cleary and McCaulay. Elsthorne. were granted permission to erect a petrol bowser.

On the motion of Cr. E. T .Wilder, seconded' by Cr. Butlerfi it was resolved that Mr A C. Russell, chairman of the Waipukurau Conntv Council, he delegated to represent the council in addition to the Wnipukurnu Council nt the Harbour Commission proceedings
