“DOWN WITH AMERICAN TORTURERS I” SACCO-VENZETTE PROTESTS. London, Aug. 6. The spectacle of a home-made electric chair, complete with huge volt meters, black hood and foil plates, by the Nelson Column in Trafagar Square surprised Londoners iu the middle of the afternoon. t The occasion was the Sacco-Ven-zetti demonstration organised, by the International Class Wur and Prisoners’ Aid Society. A crowd of 5000 composed the delegations. The London Communist branches from the suburbs sang revolutionary songs and waved placards bearing the legend “Down with the American Torturers.” A resolution was carried expressing the desire to show American Imperialism that the London workers will do all possible to save Sacco and Vanzetti. After the meeting, the deputation proceeded to the American Embassy to present a resolution. AVhile an excess of. 100,000 police and special guards continue their vigilance in various large cities against possible outbreaks of violence as a result of the Sacco-Vanzetti case, no further ooinbings iri'e reported to-day. Counsel for the condemned meanwhile will make a final plea before Judge Thayer to-morrow for another trial, but this, is rot expected to be granted, and it is feared thereafter radical demonstrations will begin. The Socialist party and group trade unions have issued’ a call for n one-day protest strike on Tuesday, involving 330.000 n>cn. Permission to hold a monster protest meeting here was refused by the police, but the leaders declare it will, nevertheless, be held. A large force of police, armed with riot guns, dispersed 10,000 in a protest meeting in Boston to-day. Peculiar forms of public hysteria have been created bv the situation. Newspapers are printing n score of headlines over all kinds of minor accident items, setting forth rumours that they have been caused by bombs. The newspapers furthermore report that they are constantly receiving telephone calls from frightened citizens who state that thev are fearing explosions and asking for Information.
