Dominions and Britain. STATE SECRETARY IN SOUTH AFRICA FIRST CALL IN WORLD TOUR. (By Cable—Pres. Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 9, 10.55 a.m) Capetown, August 8. On arrival at Capetown to-dav. the Rt. Hon. L. S. Amery. Secretary of State for the Dornin ions, was presented with a civic address of welcome, which made a strong point of ncknoweldging South Africa’s debt for its protection bv the British Navy. Replying, Mr Amery said the purpose of his South African visit was the maintenance of personal contact between the Governments of the Dominions. which experience had l shown to be indispensable. He said: — Understanding and wmpathv arc the all essential elements in our free and eflual Imperial co-opera-tion.
Interviewed, Mr Amery emphasised the absolute equality and freedom of all partners in the British Commonwealth ,and declared that the Imperial Conference had cleared awav misunderstanding which might have prevented future co-operation and unity. He acknowledged the help given to Great Britain by preferences and spoke hopefully of the future work of the Empire Marketing Board.
Mr Amery left for Pretoria, where he will be the guest of the Premier He will make a six weks’ tour of the Union and Rhodesia.
