Floods in Yangtze
OVER THOUSAND DROWNED. THOUSANDS RENDERED DESTITUTE. RELIEF MEASURES URGENT. (By Cable —Press Assn. - Copyright.) (Received 14, 9.30 a.m.) Shanghai, July 13. More than 1000 natives in Southern Anhwei were droit* ed and many thousands are destitute and homeless through a sudden rise in a Yangtsze tributary ,amounting to 10 feet. In a few hours the flood inundated all villages on both banks and several miles of dykes were broken.
A tremendous loss of property occurred, thousands of head of cattle perished and the crops are ruined. All the buildings on the farms were swept away.
Appeals for aid have been broadcasted. intimating that unless immediate measures are adopted thousands more wil) perish from exposure and starvation
Sampans and junks as a means of rescue are pitifully small and many craft were overcrowded and capsized, the occupants being drowned.—(A. and N.Z.)
