UNEMPLOYMENT.
TIMARU MEN SEEK RELIEF. DEPUTATION TO MAYOR. Timaru, July 14. A meeting to-day of 120 unemployed able-bodied men marched to the Council Chambers, where the Mayor (Mr. G. J ( Wallace) received thefri. The unmpioyed leaders placed the position before the Mayor asking the council to afford relief by raising a loan for works. They stated that their wives and children were destitute and needed meals
The Mayor replied that he would call a special meeting of the council on Monday to consider raising a loan of £5OOO and also call a meeting of citizens on Monday morning to form a citizens’ committee to raise funds. Twenty men will start work on Tuesday for the council on Maori reserve improvements.
