NAPIER BOARD'S MEETING

GENERAL BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Napier Harbour Board was held in Napier yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs A. E. Jull (chairman). J. J. Langridge. G. C. Lowe, N. P. Eriksen, J. E. Jones, P. Higgins. 0. Nelson, J. Vigor Brown, P AV. Peters, J. 0. Bryant, G. F Roach. H. Anderson and E. A. Goodger. The Marine Department wrote acknowledging receipt of the board’s amended by-laws regarding berthage, haulage and other cnarges.—Received,

The Hon. Downie Stewart advised that harbour hoards were not included in The Relief of Unemployment Bill, 1926, owing to unsuitability of capital works and difficulties in authorising loans without polls where rating powers differed from those of local authorities subject to Local Bodies Loans Act, 1926. He regretted being unable to enlarge Act so as to embrace harbour boards.—Received The Hawke’s Bay County Council wrote asking if the dredging works which it was understood the Harbour Board contemplated carrying out would necessitate the removal of the old Westshore bridge and iT so. could they be advised approximately the date when it would be necessary to dismantle the bridge. —Mr Jull stated that the contemplated dredging would necessitate the dismantling of the bridge, but the board could undertake to give two months’ notice of when it was desired to remove the structure.

L. E Harris wrote stating that on account of the flood the property which he was grazing had been rendered almost useless and offered a reduced rental, the matter to’be reviewed by the board from month to month. He pointed out that he would have been immune from flood on the Richmond block had someone not cut the dam at the back of the Maraenui township. Mr. Harris also informed the board that the bank bordering the Richmond block along the Tutaekuri needed repairing. —lt was agreed to make a reduction, the position to be again reviewed within n month’s time.
