(Own Correspondent.)

The second annual ball of the Catholic community was held in the Municipal Theatre last night, and attracted a large atendance. Mr J. Boyce was responsible for close attention to secretarial details, and the ladies’ committee gained special kudos for the excellence of the supper arrangements. To Messrs Cardson and Baxter is principally due the success of the decorative section o’Halloran’s Orchestra provided firstclass music. A party of local sports who left bv the first special train on Saturday, took as a mascot a black and white goat, the property of Mr C. F. Hartland. The animal was seen to be looking out of the carriage window as the train pulled out of the station. It had a look of satisfaction —no doubt in token of its confidence as to the result of the visit of the Shield challengers to Wairarapa. On arrival on the Solwav ground, the moscot paraded in full regalia, to the intense amusement of the crowd, and invaded the ground during the game, necessitating a halt being called while he was forcibly removed. What eventually became of the goat is not known, for when last seen he was making in the direction of Carterton. pursued by numerous juveniles. At basketball on Saturday, Waipukurau Section A were defeated (>v Waipawa Section A by 18 to 0. ano Waipukurau Section B by Waipawa Section Bbv22to 0. In the primary game, Waipawa A defeated Waipukurau A by 6 to 0.

Mr Cardston is a relative of Capain T. J. Watts, the secretary of the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand, who is well known to all the members of the local brigade, and the function was in the nature of a compliment to Mr Watts. The committee of the Marakeke Ladies’ Golf Club has in view the holding of a ladies’ open championship on August 24th and 25th. ]f these dates proved unsuitable, then on August 17th and lsth.
