T.B. SUFFERERS.

CONTINUATION OF TREATMENT VERY NECESSARY WORK. At the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board yesterday, a discussion took place on a lettex* from the Director-General of Health, written in reply to one from the Board relative to continuation of treatment for tuberculosis sufferers. The Director-General’s letter stated that the matter had been fully considered. and he hoped to have an opportunity in the near future or discussing the matter with the board. Mr G. McKay appealed to rhe Board to urge the Government to <h> something for those sufferers. A small home here and there throughout the country would meet the position to some extent. They were the unfortunates whose position was practically hopeless, and they were almost in the “not-waiitcd” class. Mr J. B.' Andrew stated that the Department was doin<» excellent oi k among the children ana. with parents’ permission, many children had been sent to sanatoria. Excellent results had been achieved, but the Department was not talking much about it. He considered the Department was working on right lines in trying to arrest the disease among the young. Mr F. B. Logan criticised one aspect of the Department’s work, stating that thev were in too great a hurry to discharge patients in order to make room for new ones. Mr Andrew refuted Mr Logan’s statement that the Department did not follow up discharged patients, saving that this was done even bv ’’he Board.

Mr 11. Hill* I quite appreciate the Department trying to take the case in the initial stages, but there are the adults to be considered. Thev seem to be the outcasts of the public Something should be done for them. On the motion of Messrs Hill and McKav. the Board decided that while appreciating the work the Department was doing, it was of opinion that it was important for something to he done for those adults afflicted with the disease and excluded from s’natoria.
