Hockey

GAMES OF THE WEEK.

(By

“Corner.”)

The last round of the competitions was played at Cornwall Park last Wednesday, with the result that "Reds” are up level with "Blues” in the ladder, each team having 11 points to their credit. It is to be hoped that the powers that be will decide to play off a final between the two, as "Reds” have worked hard and deserve an opportunity to win outright. Will we see another match ?

Both games on Wednesday were very fast, open and clean contests, each aide getting their share of the ball. Although "Reds” defeated the "Greens” by five goals to nil, the score was not a true indication of the merits of the teams, as "Greens” played with two men short. a « « The “Blues” versua “Golds” game proved most exciting, as the score five all indicates. The issue was in doubt right up to the call of time, Callaghan played well for “Blues,” notching two good goals, Flowers, Scott and Hayes adding one each. For "Golds” Pearson, who is a very consiste.nt player, and Heighway another dependable scorer, secured two goals Mich, and Brimer added hie quota of one.

Th e"Reds” have improved beyond all knowledge since the commencement of the season, and in the clash with “Greens” displayed exceptionally good combination. Harry Bone Was the outstanding player during the game, notching no loss than three goals, while Schroder and Grengide added one each.

The following is the final selection of the representative team to visit Wairoa next week: Forwards, Schroder, Miller, Grenside, Startup, and Plummer. Halves, Pearson, Bone, Killett. Back*, Duck and Flower. Goalkeeper, S. Heighway. Emergencies Symnnda, Terrace, and Lynch..

Cars have been arranged to leave at 2 p.m. Wednesday. All who wish to make the trip pilease notify the selector before Monday evening, so that extra conveyances may be arranged.

F. Richardson will have to develop a more upright style than the crouch lie displayed last Monday evening, if he persists in poking his face out, he is bound to stop something from an opponent at the championship contests next week. L. Phillips on the form shown last' Monday will go far in the lioxing world. He is steadiness and coolness itself, and takes a hard one with a grin, invariably returning the compliment with interest. H- Musson was unlucky to be beaten in the light-weight semi-final last week. It certainly appeared that Hugh was leading by a good margin of points. However, We can’t al! be judges. The elasb between H. Lawton and G. Gordon last week was like two windmills in collision. Both slogged away at each other in a blind endeavour to wear his opponent down, but the longer reach and extra weight told in Lawton’s favour He will have to do better next week at-Napier.
