AIR COMPRESSOR EXPLODES.
STARTLING ACCIDENT AT WELLINGTON. TWO MEN INJURED. Wellington, Dec. 28. The apparent failure of a safety valve on an air compressor used for the supply of free air for motor tyres caused a startling explosion in the Seater building, in Lambron Quay, this morning. 'Hie concussion xvas so terrific that jt wrecked txvo offices and a storeroom. Two men in one of the offices xvere cut about the arms by flying* glass, but £he room in which the explosion occurred was fortunately unoccupied. The explosion occurred in rooms used by Firestone Tyres, Ltd. The air compressor xvas capable of xvilthstanding a pressure of 250 pound.?, but there is a safety valve xvhich comes into play at 200 pounds, but apparently it must have Jammed. The explosion wrecked the timbers of the room, electric meters, and gas pipes, and cracked the concrete walls. It also wrecked a big glass partition between the offices.
