DIVORCE LAW IN TURKEY.
ENDING WOMEN’S SUBJECTION. (Received 28, 9.5 a.m.) Constantinople, Dec. 26. A clause in the new Turkish civil code ends the right of a man to divorce his wife at will and without trial. Henceforth divorces will be granted only by a decree of tho courts, and only in such cases as insanity, desertion and unfaithfulness. This terminates one of the outstanding phases of women’s subjection in Turkey. Moslems, under the old laws, were able to divorce a wife merely by announcing the. fact before two witnesses, or writing “I divorce so and so.”—(A. and N.Z.)
