HELPLESS CAPTIVES.
TURKS’ TRADE N ARMENIAN GIRLS. London. Doe. 24. Tho Rev S. W. Cackett, secretary of the. Bible Lands Mission Kr ]( J y, w’ho has just returned from Syria, makes shocking disclosures of the treatment of Armenian ami other Christian girls by Turkey. The Mission is now buying g>rb: for £1 a head to save them "rom the horrors of the harem, where girls are taken when they are fourteen years of age. Younger children are farmed out to Arabs and Kurds, who keep them un til they are fourteen a::d then sell them io harem keepers. Meanwhile, girls of eight to ten years of age are forced to drive the beasts of the Arabs and Kurds to water and to do other work of these nomadic peoples. They are helpless captives. The League of Nations estimate that tho victim’s number at least 36,000 but the recent trouble in the Mosul district has largely added to the number. —(A. and N.Z.)
