FIRES.

HEAVY T.OSS TO FRUIT MERCHANTS. Wellington,* Dec. 23. A fire attended with heavy loss occurred near Courtney Place this evening. The Wellington Fruit Exchange building in Blair street was almost totally destroyed. The heaviest losers are Thompson Bros, and Coy., and Byron Brown (open warehouse and crorftery importer). Several other firms sui fered damage by heat, smoke and water.

The fire was discovered at 8 o’clock by the employees of Thompson Bros, and Laery and Co. The top portion of the building was occupied by Byron Brown and apparently the fire com menced in or near there. 'J.he fire brigade made a splendid fight and saved two other buildings, but premises and stock of the firms named and several others were either destroyed or damaged, it is stated that the losses are in the vicinity of £15,0Q0.

Thompson Bros. Ltd. advise their customers by advertisement in this issue that the fire has not interfered with their general merchandise oi auctioneering departments and that business is being carried on as usual.
