In the Neal and Close competition Waipukurau B ,defeated Porangahu A in the third grade tennis match played on Saturday, by 11 sets (126 games) to

5 sets (93). During shunting operations in the local railway yard yesterday afternoon a truck came into collision with a motor car driven by Mr T. E. Whelch, with the result that the car was pushed along the line for some distance, and across the cattle-stop near Ruataniwha street. Mr Whelch had the good fortune to escape uninjured and the cur was not balance disputed.

The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council was held last night there being present the Mayor (Mr E. A. Goodger), Councillors J. 11. Hindman, R. McLean, J. Warren, E. H. Leigh, and J. E. Turner. A letter was received from H. W. Climie, C.E., Hastings, concerning payment on the full amount raised as a sewerage loan, he objecting to the deduction of expenditure on interest and sinking fund, contending that the commission of 5 per cent was payable on the full amount of the loan expenditure (£22,600). The Council held an op posite opinion and decided to advise accordingly, £79 4s is involved in the balance disputed.

The Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board applied for the refund of £5 paid as a heavy traffic license fee for a motor vehicle, it being the contention of the Board that Mr T. J’. Martin, counsel to the New Zealand Power Boards Association, had advised that (he Board 's lorry docs not come within the scope of the Public Works Amendment Act, 1924, but would be hit by any valid by-law- made by the Borough Council under the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, which (lid not apply to the latter body, in view of the absence of such a by-law. The Council was of the opinion, as expicssed by the Mayor, that the fee had been lawfully collected and could not be refunded. An application for a sv.osldy of £lO towards enabling the Boy Scouts to worthily represent “the most important place in New Zealand’’ at the Dornin ion jamboree at Dunedin next month, wqs only granted in part, viz to the exetent of £3 3s. An amendment To this effect moved by the Mayor and seconded by Mr McKean, was* carried as against a motion in favour of a grant of £5 as urged by Cr Hindman and seconded by Mr Warren. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council held on Monday night it was decided that the annual grant of £2O towards the Waipukurau Town Band be voted, the Mayor being of the opinion that the Band had fulfilled its obligation, i.c., providing twelve concerts during the year. The Public Trustee has advised the Borough Council that the interest ana sinking funds will carry an increase of interest, viz., quarter per cent, from January Ist, 1926. The Borough Inspector reported to tlio monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council last night thta bidding permits totalling £24,292 had Deen issued so far this year (ending March 31st), for a total of 28 permits. Last year 35 permits were issued for the corresponding period, at an estimated value of £19.572 18s. Ere the ordinary business of the Borough Council was brought to' a close last night the Mayor entertained the councillors, staff, officers, the audit-in-spector (Mr G. I. Gaffer) and his assistant (Mr W. Scarby), of the Napiei Audit Office, also pressmen, with refreshments. “Success to Waipukurau” was a toast honoured, the Mayor paying a tribute to the councillors, staff, audi officers and press, Cr. R. McLean, Messrs Gaffer, and A. C. Holms, respenoding.
