Blockhouses for Damascus FRENCH FEARFUL OF FURTHER ATTACKS. SECURING THE CITY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received 21, 9.10 a.m.) London, Dec. 20. The French apparently still fear further attacks on Damascus. It is stated that it is proposed to surround the city with a series of blockhouses con-, nected with barbed wire, whereby it is hoped to prevent raids from without and make it impossible for the rebels to take refuge iu the city and emerge later therefrom at their sweet will as hitherto. The scheme is already being put into operation.—(Sydney “Sun” cable*) SARRAIL’S POLICY DENOUNCED. SCENES IN THE CHAMBER: Paris, Dec. 18. There were excited scenes in the Chamber of Deputies during the debate on the Syrian situation, in which the Opposition launched some fierce denunciations of General Sarrail’s policy. General Sarrail was present in the gallery y and several times M. Painleve protested against personal attacks. Finally M. Heniot had to suspend the disorderly sitting. All the members of the Left party rose and cheered General Sarrail, and then the Oppositionists} concertedly boo-ed him.—(A. and N.Z!)
