Lord Inchcape
ON ECONOMIC QUESTIONS.
FAITH IN FREE TRADE. (Received 10, 1.15 p.m.) London, Dec. 9. Lord Inchcape, presiding at the Peninsular Co’s meeting, touched on a mumber of economic question* affecting the company’s interests. Pe had replenishment of ships suspended in consequence of high shipbuilding costs, and reduced dividend arstribution, which was only possible by the help of investments and drawings on reserves.
Lord Inchcape con den med the protectionist policy in its application to the Safeguarding of Industries Act. Referring to the question of dominions’ tariffs, lie drew attention! to their disposition to shut out manufactures by tariffs or subsidies. It appeared to bo the aim of India and all the dominions to manufacture their own requirements and import nothing: therefore Britain could not rely on Empire trade. Lord Inchcape expressed the opinion that not 10 per cent of the seamen had their heart in the recent strike in Australia. New Zealand or South Africa, which was led by an avowed Communist.—(Reuter.)
