NAPIER MARDI GRAS.

INTEREST INCREASING. As the days go by, and the Mardi Gras gets close at hand, so does the number of visitors to the Mardi Gras rooms increase—mothers with their small girls and boys, boys ready for the big head parade, bigger boys for the boxing tournament, and showmen, booking up space. , . .n Great interest is being taken in the tug-of-war, for boys and youths. The prizes of pocket watches for the boys and wristlet watches for the youths are going to be eagerly sought after, and good entries arc anticipated. Already Mr Clough, of the Y.M.C.A., announces three teams for the boys’ section, and one for the youths’ class, with more entries to follow.

At the request of a local sport a boys’ tricycle race has been added to the programme. This makes a crowd of boys’ items, including decorated tricycle, tricycle race, bun fight, tyre race, mouth organ solo, and tug-of war. All boys arc invited to call at headquarters, and record their entries. Entries continue to come to hand for the baby parade, mostly for tho doll pram s'ection. Good prizes are offered, and suggestions for the various classes arc gladly given on application at the Mardi Gras rooms. Any one in search of an inspiration is invited to call.

The boxing tournament will be controlled by the Napier Boxing Association, and entries may be made with the secretary of the association or at the Mardi Gras rooms. Would-be competitors are urged to record their entries early. Tlie children’s procession will beheld on Boxing Afternoon, and consists of the following classes:—Best trade or poster costume, best comic costume, best fancy costume, best paper costume. Separate classes are arranged for boys and girls, and two sections, under 12 years, and under 16 years. Another class causing much interest is the parasol parade, the classes being:—l. the most artistically decorated parasol in paper; 2 the most artistically decorated parasol in ribbon or other fabrics; and 3, the most gro tesquely decorated parasol. Other items are the yacht and speed boat races, adults’ fancy costume competition, and, of course, tho paradegrnm. Entries for the last named close 31st December.
