THE PICTURE HOUSES.

MUNICIPAL. •REWI’S LAST STAND.” The largo audience which attended tho. Hastings Municipal Theatre last evening to see the New Zealand-pro-duced picture, “Rewi’s Last Stand.” found their greatest expectations exceeded. The picture is undoubtedly far ahead ol many of tho imported films, and Mr. RudaH Hayward, who wrots and produced the feature from the narratives of Mr. James Cowan, deserves great credit lor doing more than giving us a good film. Founded on tho record of one of the most conspicuous occasions in the history of the Maori War “Rewi’s Last Stand” brings to us a page out of the stirring times of tho ’sixties, when the Maoris fought for what was undoubtedly their own property. Tlie most terrible engagement between the natives and the British troops took place at Orakau, whore a mere handful of Maoris defied our soldiers for three days, tho women fighting in the trenches with tho mon. That battle is depicted most sensationally in tho film. These battle scenes arc greater even than some taken in American country under the most modern and favourable conditions. Mr. Hayward’s picture has outshone many pictures from the greatest markets. The acting is good, the photography quite excellent, and (ho sequence flawless. There is an oxcollent supporting programme, and the orchestra accompanies in its usual capable style. COSY DE LUXE. A charming programme of photoplays was presented at Iho Cosy fheatro. Hastings, last evening, in which there were two features of note. Although Antonio Moreno has played many fine parts during his association with the silent drama, it is doubtful if he has ever been seen to better advantage than in “Her Husband’s Secret.” Opposite to him is Patsy Ruth Miller. The story is full of heart-gripping emotions, and the interest never wanes Lillian Rich and Cullen Landis arc featured in “Cheap Kisses,” a thoroughly entertaining film from start to finish. There arc the usual supports.
