A CRUEL HOAX.
ALLEGED NOTE FROM RIPPLE. WRITING NOT NIELSON’S. Wairoa, Dec. 10. The alleged note from the lost Ripple reached Sergeant Wade last night, who handed it to tlie local manager of Richardson and Co.. Ltd. The writing, compared with Nielson’s in the office records • clearly proved that the whole thing was a cruel hoax/ the product of a person with a perverted sense of humour. Tho name was spelt wrongly, and thp writing was oF quite a different character.
A corked bottle containing a messsage purporting to have been written by a member of the crew of the illfated Ripple yas found on the Mohaka Beach on Sunday. The wording of the message was as follows: S.S. Ripple. Engine, trouble, dark and ncormy night, sinking fast Ono boat got away but don’t think will -teach shore. Engineer Neilson.
