WARDER RUNS AMOK. Sydney, July 19. Arthur Moore, a warder at the Callan Park Mental Hospital, ran amok at his home in Rozelle, and attacked his wife with a hammer, severely injuring her head. Mrs. Hawkless and Stanley Hackenberg went to her assistance, and were also severely battered by Moore, who then committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor.—(A. and N.Z.) GHASTLY FLOTSAM. Rome, July 19. A group of people on the shore at Naples watched a large box drift towards the harbour. They opened it, but recoiled with horror when they found that it contained the body of a girl. In consequence of the receipt of an anonymous letter the police visited the chateau of Charles Soler, litterateur and explorer, at Chateney on France, Pqintqise, and found Madame Soler lying in the topmost room, the door of which was chained and padlocked. She was shockingly emaciated, and told the police a frightful story. She alleged that she had been confined two years ago by her husband, who demanded that she make a will in his favour. Eventually she yielded under his threats.

She now charges her husband with attempting to kill her by slow starvation. The woman is certainly a living skeleton. She saw no one, but her husband’s secretary. Mademoiselle de la Plange, who unlocked the door to the police, only, as it is alleged, under protest. Madame Soler was taken to hospital, and her husband and Mademoiselle charged with sequestration and vigilence.—(A. and N.Z.) WOMAN MURDEROUSLY’ ASSAULTED. (Received 20. 8.5 a.m.) Sydney, July 20. Following a quarrel between David William Cole and another youth at Woollahra, the father of the latter complained to the police that his son had been attacked by young Cole. The police advised him to proceed by summons, and he left the police station. In the early hours of Sunday morning, Mrs Cole, aged 51, and her daughter, Sadie, aged 21, heard knocking at tlie door. They went downstairs, opened it. and were savagely attacked by a man with an iron bar with which he battered their heads. They were sent to the hospital, both with compound fractures of their skulls. The police later arrested the father and son. SON SHOOTS FATHER. (Received 20, 10.35 a.m.) Sydney, July 20. Daniel Henry James Murray, aged 48. labourer, who is believed to be a resident of Surry Hills. Svdney, was shot dead at Albury and his son, Henry William, has been arrested on a charge of murder. Family troubles are alleged to bp the cause of the deed.
