THE PICTURE HOUSES.

MUNICIPAL. The story of “Suzanna,*’ shown to a big audience at the Hastings Municipal Theatre on Saturday evening, is one oi love and romance with a vividly colourlid background. The scenes represent not average studio settings with nothing more tangible than the imagination to go by, but are types of the original missions and habitations of the early Spanish-Californians, some of which still stand to-day in a more or less decent state of preservation. Mack Scnnett insisted, however, that the settings for “Suzanna’’ should appear as they did in 1835, and accordingly every set necessary to tho pic. tu;e was reproduced. The characters in “‘Suzanna” are drawn with great fidelity. Only men and women who look their parts, in addition to being capable actors and actresses, were employed. Mabel Normand is supported bv a wonderful cast of players, who each give a finished interpretation. There are excellent films in support of the big feature. COSY DE LUXE. “The Alaskan,” a James Oliver Curwood production, sciecned before a large audience at the Cosy Theatre. Hastings, on Saturday evening, is an out-door story based upon conditions which are so recent they can scarcely be called history. ]t te Is of the grim battle waged gainst forces seeking to exploit the Alaskan country by the son.*of th© men who went there a quarter ot a century ago. This second generation, the men of to-day. are the tine Alaskans. Thomas Meighan's now starring vehicle is an idealisation of this stuhdy race which has come into existence under the shelter of the American fag. A talented cast Las boon assembled that, among others, includes Estelle Tavlor. John SainpoJis UhafT>s Ogle, Frank Campeau and A him Mav Wong. This evening the feature will Be screened again, together with a fine supporting programme.
