TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY.
At the meeting of the Napier Harbour Board yesterday, Mr. J. A. Miller, speaking of the topographical survey recently carried out by. Air. Rochfort for the hoard, said that the chairman had stated at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce that it would cost £lOOO and that both Alossrs. W. Chambers and J. V. Brown had said that it would cost £BOO, whereas £2OO had been pad to Mr. Rochfort and a further sum (under that amount) was yet due to him. This had been a most urgent work and was one of the necessary foundaton works of any engineer of repute before undertaking important work such as river diversion or reclamation. The survey records would be of inestimable value, not only to the Harbour Board, but to the Rivers Board, Hawke’s Bay County Council, and to the whole district. No contract could have been called for the work owing to the many unknown qualities concerning it. and also because of its professional nature. Mr. Nelson had estimated the cost of the work at between £3OO and £4OO and his estimate had proved to be correct.
