NORTH v. SOUTH ISLAND. LADIES’ FINE DISPLAY. Nelson, Sept. 9. The North v. South Island match played this afternoon resulted in a very fin© display of hockey, arousing the large crowd of spectators to a high degree of enthusiasm. Although the teams had not played together before, splendid combined movements among the forwards and heady play by backs made the game of the utmost interest, and it was a splendid example of the dogged determination of each side to win. Th© result was three to two in favour of the northerners, but with just a trifle of luck in the last quarter of an hour, in which the South dominated the game, a draw’ would ■ have about indicated the respective merits of the teams.
Playing off the ti© in A section this morning, Poverty Bay defeated Wellington by three to one after a hard struggle.
