HARBOUR RECLAMATION AFFAIRS.

LETTERS FROM MR. GEORGE NELSON. At yesterday’s meeting of the Napier Harbour Board, during consideration of the letter received from Mr. George Nelson making f as to various works that should be undertaken by the board, Mf. Vigor Brown said that there was more in the letter than there at first appeared to be, and lie thought that the board should see that it was not committed to any future expense. Mr. Turner Williams considered that there was nothing in the letter to suggest that Air. Nelson was going to make a charge, and what Air. Brown had said was a lot of “hot air.” It was decided that Mr. Nelson be thanked and the suggestions made by him were referred to the secretary to carry out at his discretion.

Air. Nelson also wrote stating that the board minutes of 25th July last made no mention of the fact that his offer was on the “no cure, no pay” principle. Neither did the minutes mention that he had already expended £4OU out of his own pooket on surveys and plans, or that the final payment of £IO,OUO was only to be paid if both the board and the public were thoroughly satisfied that it had been well earned. Besides, the terms offered threw upon him the onus and expense of conducting the loan poll campaign. As the offer had not been accepted by the board Mr. Nelson took the opportunity, of withdrawing it.— Received.

In another communication Air. Nelson protested against the board’s breach of faith in dismissing him, but before taking further action he preferred to await the return of the late chairman.
