SCHOOL SITE AT PORT.

The Works Committee reported as follows, in reference to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board’s application for school site at Port Ahuriri at yesterday’s meeting of the Napiier Harbour Board The committee recommends that the property which comprises three acres or thereaboutg be submitted to tender for a period of five years at an annual rental of £5O, and if legal to do so. t he conditions of lease to provide that the property cannot be used for other than educational purposes. One of tixe conditions of lease, to be that the Education Board may acquire the freehold ol the land comprised i u the lease ' a ta valuation to t>e arrived at in the t ustomark manner and the Education Board to take all necessary steps of acquiring the free simple of the land whether by special legislation or other- , wise. Tlie Education Board to be responsible for all legal, survey, advertising and other expenses in connection with the leasehold and or the acquisition of the freehold. The committee also resolved to recommend that if possible to so do an undertaking be given by the Board-to the Education Board that when the lagoon adjacent to the area which, it is proposed to submit to lease now. is reclaimed a portion of such reclaimed area be submitted to tender for educational purposes so that if the Education Board takes up the lease first above referred to they will then be.in a position to make a complete area of five acres as suggested in theirs of May 6th.. 1924. The rental for lease and or acquisition of freehold of the additional area involved to be decided upon at a later date. If the Board agrees to the above recommendations it will be necessary to give a month’s notice to Messrs, fiarry Bros., the present tenants of the laud under review.

Mr. W. A. Chambers raised an objection. but was assured by the.chairman that the board’s interests would be safeguarded. Mr. Vigor-Brown: Mr. Chambers evidently got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning. (Laughter). The report was adopted.
