OVERHEAD RAILWAY BRIDGES.

PROPOSAL AT WAIPUKURAU.

The Patangata County Council gave no encouragement yesterday, to the proposal to erect overhead bridges to remove the danger of th© level railway crossing at Waipukurau. The Railway Department has offered to provide the bridges— on© for traffic off Racecourse road, and a footway over th© main street, thus blocking it—on condition that the local bodies concerned find th© cost of the approaches, estimated at £3700.

Cr. T. Butler moved that the letter be received.

Air. C. Pattison (chairman) remarked" that other suggestions that had been made wer© to flag the crossing and to remove the railway station about two miles away. Th© Council, he considered. need not trouble itself very much over th© project of bridge building and Waipukurau was opposed to it. I n his opinion th© best' wav to get over the level crossing difficulty was to shift th© station.

Cr. R. H. Whit© did not think the moving of the station would, cure the trouble. The trains would still go over the crossing. Th© chairman pointed out that the constant shunting over the roadway would be got rid of. If any change was to b© mad© they should make a job of it. Several members failed to see why the crossing could not b© flagged at very little additional expense and finally the motion to receive the letter was adopted.
