The London “Daily Express” understands that the report of the committee on broadcasting recommends a new license for home-made receiving sets or sets not bearing the stamp of the British Broadcastng Company. The majorty of the committee favour prohibiting the importation of foreign wireless goods.
A 64-foot tower on Church Hill, Anibergate, Derbyshire, 1000 feet above sea leved, was unveiled as a war memorial commemorating 11,000 Sherwood Foresters. The tower will carry a beacon light visible over five counties.
The Broken Hill Proprietary Company reports a net loss of £106,000 for the year ended May 31 last alter allowing £286,00P for depreciation and debenture interest.
The annual report of the InspectorGeneral of Police in New South Wales states that there were 238 fewer crimes in the country last year, but 83 more in the city. A decrease is reported in cattle stealing, burglary, and wife desertion, and a slight increase in attempted murder, manslaughter, infanticide and arson.
As the result of a delegation from the Australian Meat Council journeying to the Philippines and Japan last April, additional orders for frozen meat have been obtained. Shipments to Japan were already on the way.
A cyclonic disturbance passed to eastward of Sydney. Fine weather is expected except for showers on the north coast.
At the annual meeting of the Federal Fruit Council, Mr. Chapman said there would be no more Government pools, as it was not the function of the Government to run businesses, but to govern. Since the formation of the fruit pool it had cost Australia in three years half a million.
