TIMBER ROYALTIES.
LOCAL BODIES’ CLAIMS. Taumarunui, July 24. At the Timber Royalties Commission, the chairman of the Taumarunui County Council estimated that the county required £365,000 for metalling roads. He contended that half the timber royalty should bo paid to the local body. Another witness said his district had not received any royalty, though the Government had drawn £50,000. They had always been turned down on account of the Main Trunk Act of 1899. Mr Campbell, Conservator of Forests, contended that local bodies were not entitled to the timber royalty, and must depend on grants for maintaining roads. He urged that great care should be exercised in reserving forest areas. One more mistake would be fatal.
